When Rolex first unveiled the all-new Yacht-Master II in 2007, so was a fresh 4160 calibre movement (now currently 4161) and unique function: the regatta countdown.
Rolex truly creates functional art within their professional Oyster Perpetual lines. The Submariner measures a diver’s amount of oxygen remaining; the scientist’s Milgauss has more resistant against electromagnetic waves; the original Yacht-Master measures an elapsed amount of time. The regatta countdown featured on the Yacht-Master II is no exception for the yachting enthusiast or professional.
The regatta countdown is a programmable function using the Ring Command bezel. Working in conjunction with the internal movement, the bezel acts as the key, where one can program the countdown to be set and synchronized to the sequence of the 5 to 10 minute countdown used to prepare for before the official start of a sailing regatta. The official countdown is indicated by the hoisting of flags and sound signals.
The entire design, including the dial, is aimed towards its professional intention. The seconds are indicated on the lower half of the dial in a separate circle so not to be confused with the large, red countdown seconds hand that sweeps over the entire dial. Forgoing Arabic or Roman numerals, even the time of day markers are simple luminescent blocks.
