Origins of the Rolex GMT-Master II

In 1955, a historic collaboration with Pan American Airways laid the foundation for one of horology's most capable travelers: the Rolex GMT-Master

Fast-forward to 1983, and the evolution of this multi-timezone masterpiece took flight once more with the introduction of the GMT-Master II.

The 1983 release brought a significant advance to the cockpit - an independently adjustable hour hand. This new mechanism meant pilots and travelers could now set local time without disturbing the GMT hand, making timezone changes more intuitive than ever before.

The first GMT-Master II, reference 16760, housed this new movement in a slightly thicker case. Each subsequent evolution has refined the concept further.

In 2007, Rolex introduced its ceramic bezel technology, bringing new durability to the watch's distinctive two-tone bezels used for day/night time indication.

The evolution of the GMT-Master II reflects changing times in aviation and travel. Originally created when international flights were the preserve of professional pilots, the watch adapted as global travel became commonplace.

The independently adjustable hour hand proved perfect for frequent travelers who needed to quickly adjust local time without losing track of home time.

The bezel's day/night color schemes weren't just aesthetic choices - they offered practical advantages for quick time zone readings, with the darker colors traditionally representing night hours.

The transition to ceramic bezels in 2007 solved a common issue with the earlier aluminum inserts - the tendency to fade and scratch over years of use. These Cerachrom bezels maintained their crisp colors and markings indefinitely.

Today's GMT-Master II builds on these technical foundations while incorporating modern advances in metallurgy, movement technology, and case construction.

Key Features of the Rolex GMT-Master II

Dual Time Zone Functionality

  • The GMT-Master II features a 24-hour hand and a bidirectional rotatable bezel with 24-hour markings. The wearer can track two time zones simultaneously, and a third time zone can be tracked temporarily by rotating the bezel.

Rotatable Bezel with Cerachrom Insert

  • The bezel, crafted from Rolex’s proprietary Cerachrom ceramic, is virtually scratchproof, fade-resistant, and UV-resistant.
  • The two-tone bezel colors—such as "Pepsi" (blue and red), "Batman" (blue and black), and "Root Beer" (brown and black)—are iconic identifiers of the GMT-Master II.

Rolex Caliber 3285 Movement

  • Modern GMT-Master II models are powered by the Caliber 3285, featuring Rolex’s patented Chronergy escapement and a 70-hour power reserve.

Bracelets

  • The GMT-Master II is available with Oyster and Jubilee bracelets. Both bracelets feature the Easylink comfort extension system for quick adjustments.

Materials

  • GMT-Master II materials include Oystersteel, Rolesor (steel and gold combination), and 18k solid gold.

Buy a Used GMT-Master II

Ever tried getting a new GMT-Master II from an authorized dealer? The waiting list is longer than the passenger list on most international flights.

Unless you have a golden relationship with your AD or are ready to splurge on other items to prove your loyalty, you might be waiting for quite some time.

The pre-owned market changes this equation entirely, opening up decades of these legendary travel companions.

Want a classic black bezel for under-the-radar elegance? A "Batman" for that perfect mix of sport and style? The secondary market puts these choices within reach.
