How to Set the Rolex GMT Master II: Step-by-Step Guide

Mastering the GMT-Master II’s local-hour jump, 24-hour hand and bezel takes just a few minutes when you follow the right sequence.

In the 10 interactive slides below you’ll see each crown position, when to stop the seconds, how to advance the date, and the fastest way to lock in a second-time-zone at a glance.

Step-by-Step Guide:

Slide 1: To set your GMT-Master II, we will use all the mechanics shown.

Slide 2: Here are all the winding crown positions.

  • Position 0: Fully Closed
  • Position 1: Manual Wind
  • Position 2: Set the Hour & Date
  • Position 3: Set the Minute & 2nd time zone with the 24-Hour Hand

Slide 3: Unscrew the crown by rotating counterclockwise, where it will naturally pop out into position 1.

Slide 4: We find it easiest to set the GMT by starting out in Position 3. Gently pull the crown all the way and the second hand will stop moving.

Slide 5: Both the minute and 24-hour hand will move and the date will advance as you pass over midnight.

Slide 6: Use the 24-hour bezel to set the second time zone first. In this case, I will be setting it at 1600, or 4 pm in 12-hour time. You can now set the minute.

Slide 7: Now push the crown into position 2. Here you can quick-set the date by moving the hour hand.

Slide 8: Pushing the crown back into position 1, wind the crown 20 rotations to give the movement a manual charge.

Slide 9: This is something you will need to do whenever you set the time or at least once a month for maintenance.

Slide 10: Push the crown towards the case as you rotate it clockwise to close to ensure waterproofness.
